Teresa Olaizola Azumendi
I studied fine arts, with the specialization in sculpture, later on I studied a master’s degree in ceramic design and sculpture in the University of the Basque Country. Truth is that my first contact with clay was when I was 7 years old, then it was only a form of entertainment but over the years, it has become in a way of living. The attraction I always felt to the clay is related to the fact that the clay allows you shape your ideas and emotions. The clay’s own plasticity gives you a sensation of well-being, that helps you put in perspective what running around in your mind.
After delving into the knowledge of pottery in various schools dedicated to different techniques (designs, colours, moulds, potter’s Wheel….), in 2017 i decided to open my own space with a line of personal design. That was, how Buztin Artean was created, in one of the seven streets of the Historic Centre of Bilbao (Belostikale 14), trying to recover the culture of crafts.
Buztin Artean is a place for personal creation, in which I give life to my ideas, and I offer them to the public. My line of work is the result of years dedicated to the investigation, not only of the different types of clay, but the oxides and glazes in the multiple decorative techniques, as of today, I use clay of different temperatures. To this day, I use low temperature clay as earthenware and high temperature as stoneware. My pieces are decorated with slip-coating and glazes that I make, to get the colour details that distinguish my work.
Apart from that, Buztin Artean, is a space where I invite people to get their hands dirty and explore all the possibilities that these materials offer, in the classes that I give.
If you want to know a bit more of me and my space, here you have a video that Sinadurak TV filmed at the start of 2020.
